Oyo govt cracks down on illegal fuel sellers amid nationwide hike

The Oyo State Special Task Force on Friday conducted raids on black markets selling petroleum products along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The operation targeted shanties and illegal structures used for the sale of fuel.

Led by Sunday Odukoya (rtd), the executive assistant to the governor on security matters and head of the task force, the team apprehended suspects and confiscated equipment used in the illicit trade.

Speaking during the operation, Odukoya warned that the government would continue enforcement until illegal fuel sales are eradicated, highlighting the safety and security risks posed to residents and motorists.

He added that repeated warnings and prior enforcement actions, including fines of ₦200,000 for offenders, have failed to stop the trade, necessitating intensified action.

The task force head also noted ongoing efforts to improve visibility along the expressway, including clearing about 50 metres of roadside vegetation on both sides to enhance safety.

Odukoya further urged the public to support security agencies by refusing to patronize illegal fuel sellers and reporting suspicious activities.

The operation involved personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Amotekun Corps.
