Oyo govt issues 2-week ultimatum to roadside traders

The Oyo State Government has issued a two-week ultimatum to traders operating along Airport Road, Old Ife Road, and Onipepeye areas of Ibadan, directing them to relocate to approved markets.

According to the government, the directive, which expires on Monday, October 27, 2025, aims to curb environmental hazards, promote safety, and preserve the state’s tourism appeal.

A statement from the government noted that the continuous use of walkways, drainages, and road verges for trading and container shops poses serious risks to public safety and infrastructure. It added that despite the construction of modern markets across the city, some traders still prefer roadside locations, which obstruct drainage systems and increase the risk of flooding.

The statement further warned that the unsightly nature of roadside trading undermines the state’s investment in tourism development, as such scenes discourage visitors.

“All affected traders are expected to comply with the directive within the stipulated period,” the government said, warning that failure to do so would attract enforcement actions, including confiscation of goods and possible prosecution.

The government also appealed for the cooperation of all residents to ensure environmental order and sustainable urban development across Ibadan and other parts of Oyo State.
