Oyo landlords to receive compensation for Ibadan Circular Road project

By Adejayan Gbenga

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced that compensation for property owners affected by the Ibadan Circular Road project will commence this week.

Makinde made the announcement during a media chat on Fresh FM on Sunday, where he also disclosed plans to formally gazette a 75-metre setback for built-up areas along the corridor.

The governor’s announcement comes amid sustained agitations by residents over demolitions, land acquisition and the extent of the setback for the 110-kilometre Circular Road project.

The proposed gazetting of the 75-metre setback is expected to provide legal clarity on the extent of land acquisition in built-up areas, particularly in densely populated communities along the corridor.

However, the implications for individual properties will depend on the contents of the gazette, approved survey plans and the implementation framework adopted by the state government.

On compensation, the governor’s commitment to commence payments this week is expected to address concerns raised by affected homeowners and business owners seeking fair valuation and prompt payment for their properties.

Affected residents are awaiting further details on eligibility, the valuation process, payment schedules and mechanisms for resolving disputes arising from the acquisition and demolition exercise.

The Ibadan Circular Road project is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at easing traffic congestion, improving connectivity and stimulating urban development. Attention will now focus on the commencement of compensation payments and the formal gazetting of the setback as promised by the state government, amid calls for transparency, fairness and respect for property rights.
