Oyo PDP gubernatorial aspirant raises concern over 2027 election credibility

By Adejayan Gbenga –

Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial aspirant in Oyo State, has criticised the Senate for removing electronic transmission of election results from the Electoral Act, warning that the decision could threaten the credibility of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released to journalists on Friday in Ibadan, Ajadi described the Senate’s move as a setback to Nigeria’s democratic progress, cautioning that it could reopen opportunities for electoral malpractice and erode public trust in the voting process.

He noted that without mandatory electronic transmission, loopholes may be exploited to manipulate election outcomes.

“Nigerians are deeply concerned about the Senate’s rejection of electronic result transmission,” Ajadi said. “Making it optional or removing it entirely sends the wrong message and raises serious doubts about the integrity of future elections.”

Ajadi urged the Senate President and lawmakers to reconsider the amendment, insisting that electronic transmission should be compulsory for INEC.

He warned that ambiguity in the Electoral Act could lead to ballot box snatching, result manipulation, and election-related violence.

He called on the National Assembly to prioritise the will of Nigerians over political interests, stressing that only a clear and unambiguous Electoral Act can guarantee that elected leaders reflect the genuine choice of the people.

“The Senate must ensure that Nigeria is governed by leaders freely and fairly chosen by the electorate by removing all uncertainties from the Electoral Act,” he added.
