The Oyo State Executive Council has approved a supplementary budget that increases the state’s 2026 appropriation from N892.1 billion to N1.102 trillion, pushing the budget above the N1 trillion mark for the first time.
The approval was granted at the council meeting held on Tuesday and was announced on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the additional spending plan would support ongoing projects and key government programmes.
According to Oyelade, the supplementary budget adds about N210 billion to the original estimate following requests from ministries, departments and agencies seeking additional funds to complete critical projects and meet development targets before the end of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.
He explained that the revised budget would strengthen the government’s capacity to deliver infrastructure, social welfare and economic development initiatives across the state.
The council also approved the release of N8.77 billion as the first tranche for the procurement of teaching and learning materials for primary and junior secondary schools. The intervention, valued at N23.01 billion, will be implemented in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission and the World Bank.
Oyelade said the materials would cover key subjects, including Numeracy, Literacy, Mathematics, English Language and Basic Science, adding that successful implementation of the programme could qualify the state for performance-based funding of $2 per student per subject.
In a separate approval, the council sanctioned the payment of $250,000 to support programmes under the African Continental Free Trade Area initiative, a move aimed at positioning Oyo as a major hub for trade and investment opportunities across Africa. It also approved N5.91 billion for the implementation of the 2026 work plan under the Health Insurance and Food Security components of the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery programme.
The commissioner said the funding would help sustain measures designed to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal and prevailing economic challenges. The council also appealed to the Nigerian Union of Teachers to reconsider actions disrupting academic activities in some schools, while reaffirming efforts to address security concerns arising from the recent abduction incident in Oriire Local Government Area. It further congratulated Governor Makinde on the qualification of Shooting Stars Sports Club for continental competition and pledged support to prepare the Lekan Salami Stadium for international fixtures.
