The Oyo Scholars Congress (OSC) and the Oyo Global Forum (OGF) have expressed strong opposition to the recent inauguration of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs by the state government under Governor Seyi Makinde.
In a joint statement issued on Friday by Prof. Seun Kolade of Oyo Scholars and Mr Taiwo Hassan of Oyo Global Forum, the groups criticised the introduction of a rotational chairmanship for the council, arguing that the arrangement places the throne of the Alaafin of Oyo on the same level as other traditional rulers.
They described the policy as “historical vandalism,” warning that it undermines the centuries-old civilisational order and traditional hierarchy of the Oyo Kingdom.
“Oyo is not just a state; it is a civilisation with deep cultural roots that extend across the Yoruba world and the diaspora,” the statement said.
“The Alaafin’s throne is unique and represents the apex of historical and cultural authority in Oyo. It cannot be rotated or treated as equal to other crowns”, the groups added.
The groups also faulted the absence of Kabiyesi Oba Akeem Owoade at the inauguration, describing it as a significant break from established Yoruba traditional governance, which they said is rooted in lineage, continuity and historical authority.
They commended the Alaafin for publicly clarifying that he did not endorse the rotational chairmanship arrangement.
OSC and OGF called on the Oyo State Government to reverse the rotational policy and reaffirm the Alaafin’s position as the supreme traditional authority in the state.
According to the groups, any meaningful reform of traditional institutions must be anchored in respect for history and culture, which they described as vital to governance, social cohesion and community identity in Oyo State.
