The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has launched its 2025 Ember Month Safety Campaign to reduce road accidents and promote safe driving habits across the state.

The campaign, which began with a roadshow through major routes including Bodija, Ojoo, Sango, Apata, Challenge, Beere, and Iwo Road, featured sensitization drives conducted in major Nigerian languages to reach diverse audiences.

Speaking at the flag-off, the Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd.), emphasized that the Ember months should not be regarded as extraordinary periods but as opportunities to strengthen road safety awareness.

“In road traffic management, after engineering comes enlightenment,” Adekoya said. “Once we have educated and advocated for safe driving, the next step is enforcement. We will continue enforcing traffic laws without relenting, but we also urge motorists to develop self-discipline.”

He cautioned against reckless driving, overspeeding, and neglect of vehicle maintenance, stressing that safety begins with personal responsibility.

Adekoya also announced the deployment of breathalyzers across the state to detect and caution drivers under the influence of alcohol. “If you want to drink, don’t drive. And if you must drive, don’t drink,” he warned.

Additionally, OYRTMA distributed reflective jackets to commercial drivers, especially those operating early in the morning or late at night, to enhance visibility and prevent accidents.

The chairman urged motorists to obey all traffic regulations and maintain their vehicles properly, expressing optimism that with collective responsibility, Oyo State can achieve a crash-free festive season.
