Oyotunji African Village King, Adefunmi stabbed to death in US

A close-knit Lowcountry community is dealing with the loss of its leader as a woman is arrested for murder.

According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), a stabbing happened in the Oyotunji African Village, located on Bryant Lane in Sheldon, around 2:45 p.m. on Monday.

Oba Adefunmi II was located and transported by Beaufort County EMS to an area hospital. The 47-year-old died as a result of his injuries.

After a short search, deputies arrested 53-year-old Akiba Kasale Meredith as she was walking to the scene of the incident.

Meredith faces a murder charge and is currently in custody at the Beaufort County Detention Center.

The circumstances that led to this incident remain under investigation.

Adefunmi has been the Oba, or leader, of the African village since his father died in 2005.
