OYSIEC announces December 29 as new date for Oyo LG election

The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has announced Tuesday, December 29, 2026, as the new date scheduled for all local government council elections across the state.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Commission, Babatunde Afees Adeniyi.

As revealed in the statement, the adjustment became necessary following the recent revision of the national electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

It was gathered that INEC had earlier moved the Presidential and National Assembly elections from February 20, 2027 to January 16, 2027; a date previously scheduled by OYSIEC for the conduct of the local government elections in Oyo State.

The commission further explained that the overlap in the election dates created operational and logistical challenges that required an adjustment to avoid disruptions in the electoral process, while noting that the new date was picked after consultations with relevant stakeholders.

Regarding campaigns, OYSIEC also announced that electioneering campaigns by political parties will end at midnight on Monday, December 28, 2026, adding that rerun elections, if necessary, will be conducted on Tuesday, January 5, 2027.

The commission’s statement ended by urging political parties and stakeholders to continue their preparations in line with the revised timetable.
