Peter Okoye defends birthday change, dismisses backlash as irrelevant

Afrobeat star Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has responded to critics who questioned his decision to change his birthday, insisting that their reactions were unnecessary.

Recall that the singer earlier announced on Monday that his new birthday will be November 30, a move that sparked reactions from fans of the defunct P-Square group, where he rose to fame.

Some critics accused him of being unforgiving and of further deepening the rift between himself and his brothers, who were once part of the P-Square management.

Responding via his X handle on Tuesday, the singer questioned why the matter was being taken personally.

In his words, “Una dey vex like say I cancel Christmas? Na my birthday date I move… no be your own, why e dey pain you? Even Jesus Christ December 25th date sef, people still dey debate am.”

He urged Nigerians to focus on more pressing national issues rather than his personal affairs.

“Why cry more than the bereaved? Only in Nigeria, funny how my birthday date shift is causing more pain than Nigeria’s real problems,” he added.

Mr P further maintained that the backlash has no effect on his success, stating: “Just for the record: insult no dey reduce success. Who don make am, don make am! Know that and know peace.”
