A petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) was involved in an accident on Monday in the Alagbayun area of Odo-Oba, Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The tanker, with registration number BAU 586 ZE, reportedly developed a mechanical fault, causing it to swerve off the road and overturn, spilling its contents. Fortunately, no lives were lost.

Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident on Tuesday. He said the fire service responded promptly to prevent a potential fire outbreak.

“Upon arrival, we found a Howo tanker loaded with 45,000 litres of PMS that had overturned, with fuel spilling. Our team acted immediately to neutralise the flammability of the product using foam chemical compounds,” Akinwande said.

The area was secured, and the tanker was eventually removed, allowing normal traffic flow to resume.

The incident adds to a recent spate of similar tanker accidents in the state, raising concerns over the safety of fuel transportation.
