Plumptre scores first international goal as Benin Republic hold Falcons to draw

Ashleigh Plumptre scored her first-ever goal for the Super Falcons, helping Nigeria secure qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a 1–1 draw with Benin Republic on Tuesday.

The Al-Ittihad defender, who has become a fan favourite since switching allegiance from England, opened the scoring with a fine left-footed strike midway through the first half, sparking wild celebrations among home supporters at the MKO Abiola Stadium.

Despite Nigeria’s bright start, the visitors found a way back into the game through Yasminath Djibril’s towering header in the second half — a goal that earned Benin a share of the spoils but was not enough to overturn the first-leg deficit.

Nigeria’s 2–0 win in Cotonou last week meant the Super Falcons advanced 3–1 on aggregate, booking their place at next year’s WAFCON.

Speaking after the match, Plumptre said she was “overwhelmed” to score her first international goal and proud to help the team seal qualification.

“It’s a really special moment for me,” she said. “I’m just happy to have contributed. The fans have been amazing, and this team deserves to be at WAFCON.”

Head coach Justin Madugu praised his players’ determination and focus, saying the draw was enough to achieve their mission.

The Super Falcons will now shift focus to preparations for the continental showpiece as they aim to defend their record 11 WAFCON titles and continue building towards qualification for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.
