Police arrest 55-year-old man for murder aassault in Lagos Island

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 55-year-old man, Samsideen Oladiti, popularly known as “Shamelon,” in connection with two violent incidents on Lagos Island — one resulting in death and the other in serious injury.

According to a statement released on Friday by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bababseyi B. Oluseyi, the suspect was apprehended and is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, where investigations are ongoing.

The first incident occurred on September 17, 2025, at about 3:00 p.m., when Oladiti allegedly attacked a dispatch rider using a helmet and his fists. The victim sustained serious injuries, was rushed to a hospital, and placed on oxygen. He is currently receiving medical treatment.

A second report, filed on September 18, links Oladiti to an earlier altercation on August 28, during which he allegedly assaulted another man with a metallic ring, striking him repeatedly on the head and face. Despite receiving medical attention, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on September 17. His body has been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.

Following the news of the victim’s death, tensions flared on Lagos Island as sympathizers stormed the suspect’s office at Sandgrouse Market, setting two of his motorcycles on fire in a violent protest.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, led a swift police response, deploying mobile and conventional officers as well as tactical squads to restore order in the area. He assured residents that the suspect is in custody and will face the full weight of the law once investigations are concluded.

“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to assure members of the public that justice will be diligently pursued in all the cases against the suspect,” the statement read. CP Jimoh also urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, warning against any further acts of mob justice or unrest.

The Command called on members of the public to cooperate with investigators and report any additional information that could assist in the ongoing inquiries.
