Police arrest suspected robber, recover pistol in Akure

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber, Idowu Babayemi, during an operation in Akure, the state capital.

The command said the suspect, who resides on Abusoro Street in Akure, was apprehended following intelligence reports linking him to alleged robbery activities within the area.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, operatives launched a discreet surveillance operation after receiving credible intelligence in May 2026.

The statement noted that the suspect was intercepted by officers on routine patrol along the Onimalu area of Akure on May 7, 2026.

It added that a search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of a locally made pistol allegedly concealed in his possession.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Lawal, commended the officers involved in the operation, describing their conduct as “professional and proactive”.

Lawal reiterated the command’s commitment to intensifying efforts against armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms and other criminal activities across the state. He also appreciated the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for supporting intelligence-driven policing nationwide.

According to police sources, investigation into the matter is ongoing, and the suspect would be charged to court after the completion of investigations.
