Popular Oyo cleric calls for unity, action against terrorism in South West

Popular preacher and former chairman of the Oyo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Sheikh Taofeek Akeugbagold, has called on South West residents to prepare to defend themselves amid rising insecurity in the region.
Speaking with Tribune Online, Sheikh Akeugbagold stressed the need for unity among Nigerians, regardless of religion or tribe, and condemned radical interpretations of Islam that incite violence. “Some people misuse Qur’anic verses meant for war to justify peacetime conflict. This is wrong and dangerous,” he said.
He criticised religious leaders who support extremists, emphasising that helping a fellow Muslim should mean guiding them toward righteousness, not condoning wrongdoing. He cited the Prophet Muhammad’s treatment of non-Muslims as a model for tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
On terrorism and banditry, the preacher warned against negotiating with criminals, calling for decisive government action. He suggested that Nigeria adopt measures similar to Saudi Arabia, including stringent border controls, financial oversight, and programmes to counter radical ideology.
Sheikh Akeugbagold also highlighted the role of politicians in perpetuating insecurity. He criticised the exploitation of the Almajiri system in the North and the idleness of youth in the South West, urging programmes to empower and redirect them away from crime, drugs, and ritualism.
Addressing recent controversies, he expressed disagreement with Sheikh Gumi’s approach of negotiating with bandits, stating that terrorism should be confronted firmly and without compromise. He stressed that political and religious considerations must not override the value of human lives.
On regional governance, Sheikh Akeugbagold praised South West governors for addressing uncontrolled interstate migration, calling for concrete actions to secure borders and protect citizens. He also urged traditional rulers to cooperate with authorities instead of engaging in trivial disputes.
He equally called on Nigerians to prioritise competence over religion or politics, work together for peace, and ensure the safety and prosperity of the country. Sheikh Akeugbagold, who holds degrees in Arabic and Islamic Studies and International Relations, also stressed the importance of education and moral guidance in building a secure society.
