President Bola Tinubu has described Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, the iconic publisher of Vanguard newspaper, as an eminent statesman and a towering figure in Nigerian journalism as he marks his 90th birthday.

Fondly known as “Uncle Sam,” Amuka-Pemu began his journalism career at the Daily Times before co-founding The Punch newspaper with the late Chief Olu Aboderin. In 1984, he founded Vanguard, which has grown into one of Nigeria’s most influential national dailies under his stewardship.

Commending his decades of dedication to the media industry, President Tinubu said Amuka-Pemu’s leadership and resilience have kept Vanguard thriving for over four decades despite the challenges facing the press.

“Uncle Sam remains a shining example of dedication, resilience, and integrity within the media industry,” Tinubu said. “He is not just a leader of the profession but a doyen whose influence extends beyond journalism to statesmanship in Delta State and the entire South-South region.”

In recognition of his immense contributions, Tinubu noted that Amuka-Pemu was recently conferred with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) as part of this year’s Democracy Day celebrations.

The President urged young journalists to draw inspiration from Amuka-Pemu’s exemplary career and unwavering commitment to ethical journalism.

He prayed for continued grace and long life for the veteran publisher, adding that the nation remains grateful for his invaluable service and enduring legacy.
