President Tinubu committed to press freedom, says Information Minister

By Kunle Sanni –

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a firm believer in press freedom and recognizes the vital role the media plays in nation-building, according to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

Idris made this known on Tuesday at the annual Blueprint Newspaper Lecture, Impact Series, and Awards held in Abuja. He emphasized that the President had consistently expressed his support for the media sector.

“President Tinubu is an ardent supporter of the media. He knows the media is crucial in nation-building and has repeatedly told me to carry out my duties professionally and independently,” Idris said.

The Minister added that the President would never obstruct the work of journalists, stressing the need for media professionals to collaborate in maintaining national cohesion while holding the government accountable.

He emphasized the responsibility of the press in strengthening democracy, warning that unchecked reporting could sometimes pose risks to societal stability.

“In doing your job, you have the duty to hold leaders to account, but you must also be aware of your influence. If care is not taken, media actions could inadvertently harm the fabric of society,” he noted.

Idris urged journalists to apply discernment in distinguishing between constructive and harmful narratives, cautioning against content that could divide or destabilize the nation.

Despite ongoing challenges in the information ecosystem, the Minister said he remained optimistic, noting that the Nigerian media continues to show resilience and adaptability.
