President Tinubu dispatches high-level delegation to Jigawa after tanker accident

President Bola Tinubu has sent a high-level federal delegation to Majia town in Jigawa State following a devastating tanker fire that claimed the lives of over 100 people on Tuesday night.

The delegation, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has been tasked with assessing the situation and providing immediate support to the affected community.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday, confirmed that key officials are part of the delegation. They include the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; Minister of Transportation, Senator Saidu Alkali; Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed; and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North West), Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai.

The delegation is expected to visit the scene of the incident, meet with local authorities, and visit victims receiving treatment in nearby hospitals.

President Tinubu also directed that emergency aid, including medical supplies, food, and temporary shelter, be immediately provided to the victims and their families. In addition, he expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Jigawa State, joining Vice President Kashim Shettima in mourning the loss of lives.

The President conveyed his prayers for comfort for the grieving families and for the peaceful repose of the souls of those who died in the tragedy.

In the wake of the incident, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of enhancing fuel transportation safety protocols nationwide. He instructed the FRSC to strengthen night travel safety measures, increase highway patrols, enforce stricter safety regulations, and introduce mechanisms to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The President also warned that anyone found responsible for breaches in safety standards would be held accountable.
