President Tinubu hails late Awujale as pillar of Yoruba pride

President Bola Tinubu has described the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona, as a towering figure who brought pride, dignity, and honour to the Yoruba race.

Speaking on Sunday during the 8th-day Fidau prayers held in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, the President reflected on the monarch’s immense contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey and Yoruba cultural heritage.

“Awujale brought pride, dignity, and honour to the Yoruba race. He was always there in times of need—for all of us,” Tinubu said, recalling the monarch’s support during the June 12 pro-democracy struggle and efforts to reverse the 1993 presidential election annulment.

President Tinubu noted that his own rise to the presidency in 2023 was not only supported but spiritually foretold by the revered monarch. “Our history would not have been complete if I had failed in the last election,” he said. “I was successful because of your support and the blessing of the late Awujale. I came to him, and he said, ‘You will win that election and win a re-run.’ And today, he is no more.”

He praised the late Oba Adetona as “a leader of conscience and tradition with great value,” and emphasized the depth of the monarch’s wisdom, influence, and unwavering commitment to justice and tradition.

The Fidau prayer, held in line with Islamic rites, drew dignitaries, traditional rulers, clerics, and citizens who came to pay their final respects to a monarch who reigned for over six decades.

Many attendees described Oba Adetona as one of Nigeria’s most principled and respected traditional rulers, widely revered for his fearless voice, strong character, and deep cultural insight.

President Tinubu joined other Yoruba leaders and citizens in paying tribute to a legacy he said would remain a guiding light for generations to come.
