President Tinubu mourns Humphrey Nwosu, calls for sustained democratic ideals

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the passing of former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, as a great loss to the nation. Represented by the Minister of Works, Sen. Engr. Nweze Umahi, at the funeral service in Anambra State, the President extended his condolences to the family and called for the preservation of Nwosu’s democratic values.
Speaking at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Ajalli, Orumba North Local Government Area, Umahi praised Nwosu’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution, highlighting his role in conducting one of the freest elections in the country’s history. He urged Nigerians to uphold the principles of integrity, patriotism, and commitment to democracy, which defined Nwosu’s public service.
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s resolve to sustain economic and democratic progress, stating, “The fragile economy we inherited is now on a path of sustainable growth. Our democracy is maturing, and we will continue to ensure its benefits reach all Nigerians.”

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, paid tribute to Nwosu as a visionary electoral umpire who introduced the Option A4 voting and Open Ballot System. He encouraged Nwosu’s family and associates to sustain his legacy of transparency and fairness in governance.
The funeral was attended by notable dignitaries, including Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha, Senator Victor Umeh, and other political and community leaders.
Expressing appreciation for the federal government’s support, Nwosu’s family acknowledged the outpouring of tributes as a testament to his impactful legacy in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
President Tinubu assured that his administration remains committed to deepening democratic governance, emphasizing that Nwosu’s contributions will continue to inspire future generations.
The solemn ceremony concluded with prayers for the late professor’s soul, as dignitaries reflected on his enduring influence in shaping Nigeria’s electoral system.
