Pressure group warns against politicizing traditional institutions in Kwara
By Mosunmola Ayobami, Ilorin
The Kwara Mandate Group, under the chairmanship of Mallam Rasheed Owolabi, has expressed deep concern over an alleged attempt to coerce traditional rulers across Kwara State into endorsing a particular gubernatorial aspirant.
The group’s concern was contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Ilorin on Thursday.
As disclosed by the group, there were reports of certain persons allegedly seeking to desecrate traditional institutions within the state by imposing a particular governorship candidate for their endorsement.
Describing the traditional rulers are custodians of heritage, symbols of collective dignity, and embodiments of values, the group insisted that these traditional stools must not be reduced to playthings , adding that their revered positions demand respect, and their neutrality must be preserved to maintain peace and cohesion in communities.
“We are particularly concerned about alleged involvement of state actors in orchestrating this move, which raises serious questions about fairness, equity, and respect for the traditional institution. We urge respect for the autonomy of traditional leaders and call on politicians to pursue leadership through the will of the people, not through coercion or manipulation” it read.
It added that the traditional institution is sacred, a heritage deserving protection and reverence noting that they will advocate for its dignity and sanctity, and stand against attempts to subvert it.
The group therefore called on all stakeholders to exercise restraint and respect the boundaries between governance and tradition as the long-term consequences of politicizing the traditional institution far outweigh any perceived short-term gains.
