The Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum, has imposed a 24-hour curfew following violent protests in the state.
This decision was announced in a statement by Nahum Daso, the state police spokesperson, on Thursday.
According to Daso, the curfew was imposed due to violent protests in parts of Kawori, where an improvised explosive device detonated, leading to the deaths of 16 people and leaving several others critically injured and hospitalized across various government hospitals in the state.
“In view of the constitutional mandate of the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security and law enforcement agencies toward the preservation of law and order in the state:
“You are all aware of the incident in Kawori, where an improvised explosive device detonated, resulting in the deaths of 16 persons and leaving several others critically injured and hospitalized.
“In line with our constitutional mandate to restore law and order, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umar Zulum, in consultation with heads of security in the state, has found it expedient to declare a 24-hour curfew with immediate effect.
“I, therefore, wish to call upon the good people of Borno State to remain calm and law-abiding. Further developments will be communicated accordingly.”
