PSC orders immediate retirement of senior officers exceeding service limits

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have served for more than 35 years or are above 60 years of age.

This decision was reached at the Commission’s first extraordinary meeting, presided over by its Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd.), on Friday, January 31, 2025. The meeting was attended by Justice Adamu Paul Galumje (Rtd.), DIG Taiwo Lakanu (Rtd.), and Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani.

The move comes as a reversal of an earlier policy approved at the Commission’s 24th Plenary Meeting in September 2017, which set the appointment date of force entrants based on their enlistment rather than their actual service years.

However, upon review, the Commission determined that the policy contradicted public service regulations and violated Public Service Rule No. 020908 (i & ii), which mandates retirement after 35 years of service or at age 60.

The Commission’s decision has been conveyed to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation.
