By Tosin Omojola

Racing RFC claimed the championship in the men’s category of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation Southwest League, showcasing a dominant performance to secure a 15-5 victory over Cowrie RFC. The highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash unfolded at the main bowl of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

With the national title and the Southwest champion title on the line, both teams delivered a thrilling match filled with intense tackles, ankle taps, and strategic mauls. Racing RFC took control early, ending the first half with an 8-0 lead. Scrum half Monday Omorogieva opened the scoring with a well-executed penalty kick, reflecting Racing’s poise and tactical precision.

Despite Cowrie’s dominance in scrums and line-outs, they struggled to capitalize on their opportunities as Racing maintained an edge in their kicking game. In the second half, Cowrie ramped up the pressure, but Racing’s experienced squad held firm. Flyhalf Kelechi scored Racing’s second try, intercepting a pass within Cowrie’s 22-meter zone.

Joshua Rankin, Cowrie’s flyhalf, managed a consolation try in the 78th minute, but it wasn’t enough to shift the outcome, with Racing triumphing 15–5 to capture the league title.

In other games, Eco II RFC crushed Ogun State Kings RFC with a decisive 31-0 score, while Police RFC, former champions, defeated Gosar RFC 14-0 after a slow start. Gosar RFC’s women’s team, however, salvaged some pride, securing a 22-0 win over Police RFC to claim the women’s championship title.

Racing RFC will go on to represent the Southwest region in the upcoming national rugby finals.
