REC seeks security support before Ondo June 20 by-election

The Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Ondo State, Dr Mutiu Agboke, has appealed to security agencies to support the conduct of a credible by-election in Ondo South Senatorial District, scheduled for June 20.

REC Agboke made the appeal during courtesy visits to the leadership of the State Security Service and the Nigerian Correctional Service in Akure, stressing the importance of inter-agency collaboration.

Western Post confirmed that the senatorial seat became vacant following the appointment of the former lawmaker representing the district, Jimoh Ibrahim, as Nigeria’s representative to the United Nations.

Describing the role of security operatives as “critical in the electoral process,” Adegoke noted that their roles are sacrosanct and indispensable to the success of any election.

“Security agencies are key components in the conduct of free and fair elections, and their contributions cannot be overemphasised,” he said.

The REC further explained that INEC relies on the cooperation of agencies such as the police, NSCDC, FRSC, SSS, NCS and the military to deliver a credible exercise.

Agboke equally assured residents of a transparent process, insisting that the outcome of the election would reflect the will of the people.

In their responses, the State Director of the SSS, Samaila Sagiru, and the Controller of the NCS, Charles Oyewole, pledged full support for the exercise, promising to ensure adequate security and a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the election.
