Relatives of surgical patient assault doctor at FMC Ondo

A medical doctor at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, Ondo State, was allegedly attacked by relatives of a surgical patient while attending to patients at the hospital.

The incident involved Dr. Adeniyi A., a registrar in the Department of Internal Medicine, who was reportedly assaulted at the Accident and Emergency Unit on Thursday.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) said the attack was carried out by individuals linked to a patient undergoing surgical treatment at the facility.

In a statement signed by the President of NARD, Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, the Secretary-General, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, and the Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim, the association condemned the assault.

The group described the incident as part of a growing pattern of violence against medical personnel in public hospitals. It expressed concern that such an attack could occur within a healthcare facility, noting that doctors should be protected while discharging their duties.

NARD called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible and urged hospital authorities to strengthen security measures to prevent a recurrence.
