Remo Stars on brink of CAF Champions League progress

By Tosin Omojola –

Barring the unexpected, Remo Stars look set to stroll into the second round of the CAF Champions League.

With a commanding 4-0 first-leg victory at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, last Sunday, the reigning NPFL champions should face little or no difficulty in overcoming US Zilimadjou of Comoros.

In addition to their massive advantage from the first leg, the Nigerian champions will also benefit from playing the return fixture on the same pitch, as the Comorans have adopted the Abeokuta stadium as their home ground.

Despite the clear edge, Remo Stars’ coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, insists his team will guard against complacency, stressing that they will go all out to win again and complete the job they started last Sunday.

“Ijaball,” as the tactician is fondly called, is expected to parade a strong side against the hapless Comorans, who would need nothing short of a miracle to overturn the deficit.

Remo Stars are targeting an improved outing in their third consecutive continental campaign, having failed to make a strong impact in their previous two attempts.

The Sky Blue Stars exited early in the CAF Confederation Cup, where they made their continental debut two seasons ago, and also bowed out early in their maiden CAF Champions League appearance.

Friday’s match is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m.
