Rivers LG polls: NPF defends alleged involvement, reiterates political neutrality

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has responded to allegations made by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara regarding its involvement in the recent local government elections in the state.
In a press release issued on Friday, the NPF clarified that its actions were in compliance with a Federal High Court order, reiterating that the force remains politically neutral.
The controversy arose after Governor Fubara accused the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the NPF of improper interference in the election process.
The NPF, however, emphasized that the court order had directed the police to refrain from participating in the elections, and the Rivers State Commissioner of Police had been instructed to adhere to this ruling.
On the evening of October 3, 2024, the Commissioner of Police received reports that police personnel from the Rivers State Government House had been deployed to assist with the elections at the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RIEC).
In response, the IGP authorized the withdrawal of those officers, replacing them with personnel from the Command’s Operations Department to secure the RIEC facility overnight.
The NPF explained that this deployment was a precautionary measure following a series of security breaches in the state, amid ongoing legal disputes and political tensions.
“The policemen deployed to RIEC were tasked solely with protecting the office from potential attacks,” the statement read, stressing that the action was based on intelligence and not a political maneuver.
The force expressed disappointment at the governor’s reaction, particularly his accusations and strong language directed at the police.
The NPF condemned the governor’s threats of violence and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and order in Rivers State.
In light of the heightened tensions, the IGP has ordered an increased security presence across the state.
The NPF urged citizens of Rivers State to remain calm and go about their lawful activities, assuring them that the police will continue working with other security agencies to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
