Access to safe water key to family health — Oluremi Tinubu

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, says access to safe and clean water remains essential to improving family health and advancing the economic empowerment of women across the country.
In her message on Sunday to mark the 2026 World Water Day commemorated on March 22, the First Lady said adequate water supply goes beyond meeting basic needs, stressing that it also creates opportunities for social and economic development, particularly for women and girls.
Speaking on the theme “Water and Gender” and the campaign slogan “Where Water Flows, Equality Grows,” Tinubu noted that many women and girls still shoulder the responsibility of sourcing water for their families, often at the expense of their education, health, and productivity.
She explained that ensuring access to potable water would help reduce this burden and allow girls to remain in school while enabling women to pursue meaningful livelihoods.
According to her, improved water access also plays a vital role in promoting healthier homes and stronger communities.
The First Lady called on government institutions, development partners, and communities to strengthen collaboration toward expanding access to clean water and sanitation facilities nationwide.
She added that sustained efforts in the water sector would help promote gender equality and improve the overall wellbeing of Nigerians.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to support initiatives aimed at ensuring fair and sustainable access to water resources, emphasising that equitable distribution of water is critical to national development.
