The Lagos State Government has empowered 627 residents with financial support under the “Sanwo-Olu Listen, Sanwo-Olu CARES” initiative, a welfare programme launched by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to support small business owners and vulnerable individuals across the state.
The initiative, which commenced in June 2025, saw 200 beneficiaries receive empowerment cheques in its first month. On July 1, an additional 152 residents were supported, while a new batch of 275 beneficiaries received their cheques on Friday, July 18, at a presentation held at the Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja.
Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Hon. Taiwo Afolabi, said the financial aid was in line with the governor’s campaign promise to enhance livelihoods and promote inclusive economic growth. He added that the initiative was designed to support residents with verifiable needs, including medical cases and small-scale businesses.
Afolabi outlined the criteria for accessing the programme, which include possession of a valid LASRRA card, NIN, a detailed application letter stating the purpose of the request, and a reachable phone number. He noted that several applicants missed out due to incomplete information, particularly the omission of contact details.
He explained that beneficiaries with medical challenges received financial aid ranging from N1 million to N1.5 million, while others received between N300,000 and N500,000 to boost their businesses.
“The governor has promised to bring relief to the people of Lagos, and today’s event is another demonstration of his commitment to that promise,” Afolabi said, urging beneficiaries to put the funds to proper use.
One of the recipients, Arowosafe Kehinde from Agege, expressed gratitude to the state government, noting that the N300,000 cheque he received would be invested into his gas refilling business.
