Sanwo-Olu commends traditional rulers for promoting peace in Lagos, assures improved welfare

By Adeola Ogunrinde –
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has lauded traditional rulers across the state for their continued efforts in promoting peaceful coexistence and stability. He gave the commendation on Friday at the second day of a three-day retreat for members of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, held in Lagos.
The retreat, themed “Strengthening Traditional Institutions through Collaboration for Growth and Peaceful Co-Existence in Lagos State,” served as a platform for government and traditional leaders to deliberate on pressing state issues and align strategies for collective development.
Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, emphasized the importance of traditional institutions in governance and community development.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of the traditional council and pledged continued support for their responsibilities.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also addressed some challenges facing the state, including boundary disputes with neighbouring Ogun State—particularly at Isheri-Olofin—excessive rainfall, heat waves, and rising water levels. He called on traditional leaders to support the government’s efforts in flood mitigation and land protection initiatives, while urging them to avoid internal conflicts, especially those relating to land ownership.
The Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Hon. Kayode Roberts, described traditional rulers as strategic partners in governance. He noted that they serve as a vital link between government and the grassroots, fostering peace and driving development at the community level.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, appealed for greater unity among traditional leaders, particularly in resolving the numerous land-related disputes currently in court.
Also speaking at the event, the Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, called for quarterly engagement meetings between the traditional council and the state government, to enhance communication and policy implementation.
