Speaking during the 2024 International Day for Tolerance celebration on Saturday at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of understanding and embracing diversity.
The event, themed “Tolerance Projects: The Beauty in the Diversity of Human Groups,” highlighted the need for peaceful coexistence and inclusivity.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Central Internal Audit, Mrs. Oyeyemi Ayoola, the governor stressed that fostering tolerance demands continuous effort through education, empathy, and love.
He highlighted the importance of creating spaces for dialogue to bridge differences and bring communities together.
“As a government, we are committed to promoting initiatives that celebrate our diversity. We will continue to champion advocacy programs focusing on intercultural dialogue, ensuring the younger generation learns values of respect and understanding from an early age,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
He further pledged support for community projects that encourage collaboration among individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering friendships and shared goals. “Building a truly tolerant society is an ongoing journey. It requires constant vigilance against divisive forces and a steadfast commitment to educating our youth about compassion and understanding,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted that tolerance is essential for peace and stability, particularly in today’s world, where intolerance and discrimination threaten unity. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an environment where every resident, regardless of background, feels valued and respected.
In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr. Ibrahim Layode, called for a positive and optimistic mindset among youths, urging them to embrace tolerance as a key to personal and societal growth.
“This year’s event emphasizes the need to strengthen resilience among youths, enabling Lagos and Nigeria to forge an inclusive and harmonious society. Tolerance is a collective effort, and Lagos has implemented numerous policies to promote harmony, which we will continue to uphold in the coming years,” Layode stated.
He further urged for the deliberate engagement of young people in building a united society, adding that fostering tolerance requires consistent actions and dedication from citizens.
