SAPZ will drive agricultural industrial revolution – VP Shettima

By Kunle Sanni –

Vice President Kashim Shettima has said that the full implementation of the Special Agro–Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) programme will mark a turning point in Nigeria’s agricultural and industrial development.

Speaking through the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, during the groundbreaking ceremony of the SAPZ programme in Ijaiye, Ibadan, the Vice President described the initiative as a key driver of innovation, local economic growth, and inclusive prosperity.

“We are laying the foundation for agro-industrial hubs that will empower agro-processors and farmers, stimulate local economies, and position Nigeria as a competitive player in global markets,” Shettima said.

He emphasized that the SAPZ programme goes beyond infrastructure development. “It is a bold declaration that Nigeria’s future lies in transforming its vast agricultural resources into value-added products that fuel industries, generate employment, and uplift farmers,” he added.

Describing the programme as a pillar of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Vice President noted that SAPZ reflects a broader national vision focused on restoring dignity, unlocking economic potential, and creating opportunities for all citizens.

Shettima highlighted the collaborative nature of the programme, which is supported by a strategic alliance between the Federal Government, state governments, and international development partners such as the African Development Bank (AfDB), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).

He praised Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for his leadership and support, describing it as instrumental to the launch of the programme in the state. “Your dedication to Oyo State’s development has set the stage for this historic milestone,” Shettima noted.

Recalling his recent participation at the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Vice President said he led a delegation to showcase SAPZ as Nigeria’s flagship agricultural investment and held discussions with IFAD President, Dr. Alvaro Lario, to seek additional financing for the programme.
