Saraki denies involvement in Offa robbery, accuses Kwara governor of political witch-hunt

Former Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has dismissed moves by the Kwara State Government to prosecute him over the 2018 Offa robbery incident, describing the action as a politically motivated attempt to tarnish his image.
Saraki, in a statement issued on Friday, accused Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of orchestrating what he termed a “desperate ploy by a drowning politician” to revive allegations he insisted he knew nothing about.
He maintained that he had no direct or indirect involvement in the robbery, stressing that previous investigations had cleared him of any wrongdoing.
According to him, the case had earlier been investigated by a police team from the office of the Inspector General of Police, while the Director of Public Prosecution in the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation reportedly issued legal advice stating there was no evidence linking him to the crime.
Saraki noted that based on the legal advice, only four suspects were charged, convicted at the trial court, and their convictions upheld on appeal, with the matter now pending before the Supreme Court.
He alleged that the renewed charges were triggered by his recent comments on insecurity in Kwara State, adding that the governor was attempting to use the case as a tool for political blackmail.
“This is a mere act of a desperate politician who is losing control in his party and knows that his days in governance are numbered,” he said.
Saraki further accused the state government of deliberately ignoring earlier legal findings while promoting what he described as “frivolous charges” in the media, insisting that his legal team would challenge the case in court.
