Senate President Akpabio laments frequent defections, declares ADC ‘dead’

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a declining political force following a series of defections from the party.
Akpabio made the remark on Tuesday during plenary while reading a letter announcing the defection of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South, from the ADC to the Labour Party.
The Senate President’s comment comes amid growing political realignments, with several high-profile politicians recently leaving the ADC for other parties.
Among them are former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who exited the party for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), further intensifying speculation about the party’s stability.
Reacting to the trend, Akpabio criticised the frequency of defections, suggesting that lawmakers should streamline the process to avoid repeated announcements.
“I think ADC is dead. How many times are you defecting? A month? Three times? But let us compile all the lists so it doesn’t look like a daily ritual,” he said.
He also proposed that the names of defecting politicians and their new party affiliations be documented collectively to simplify proceedings in the chamber.
