Defence minister urges students to help tackle insecurity

Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, has called on students across the country to play a more active role in safeguarding national security, emphasising that protecting the nation is a collective responsibility.

Speaking during an educational visit by students of Political Science and Diplomacy from Veritas University to the Ministry of Defence, Gen. Musa urged vigilance and civic responsibility among young Nigerians.

“Students, as youths and future leaders, have a vital role to play in fighting insecurity. See and report everything happening around you. The nation’s unity is not for government alone; everyone has a role to play in the peace and security of the nation,” he said.

The minister responded to questions on technological gaps, food and human security, and Nigeria’s international defence partnerships. He disclosed that the Ministry is strengthening collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation to address technological shortfalls and improve food production through mechanized agriculture.

“We are working closely with relevant ministries to bridge technological gaps and also using available land resources to support food production,” Musa explained.

On strengthening defence capabilities, Musa highlighted ongoing efforts to boost local production through the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON). He said skilled Nigerians are being integrated into the system to produce military equipment such as drones.

“Local production remains the most sustainable solution, especially with the challenges we face in procuring arms due to global tensions, including the Iran situation,” he noted.

The minister also warned students against engaging in cybercrime, encouraging them instead to harness their talents for national development.

“You must shun cybercrime and use your creativity and knowledge to contribute positively to the growth of this country,” he said.
