Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged both state and federal governments to adhere to a recent Supreme Court ruling mandating that local governments receive their allocations directly from the federal government.
In a statement to reporters at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, Akpabio emphasized the importance of the ruling, describing it as “the words of the king,” which must be implemented without delay.
Akpabio highlighted that legislators are bound to comply with the Supreme Court’s decision, underscoring President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to the separation of powers and the autonomy of all government branches.
“The Supreme Court has spoken, and we have no option but to abide by its ruling,” Akpabio stated.
He further called on all states to respect the Supreme Court’s decision, noting that the legislature would work to ensure the ruling is fully implemented.
“We will go back to the legislature and see where we can dot the i’s and cross the t’s to ensure full implementation.
“The words of the Supreme Court are like the words of the king; they cannot go down without implementation,” he said.
Akpabio also emphasized the significance of local government autonomy, stating that it is essential for grassroots development.
“Local government administration is meant for the grassroots, and their funds should be utilized accordingly. This ruling enables local governments to undertake their own projects, marking a great day for democracy,” he added.
Addressing the issue of local government elections, Akpabio called for impartial elections at the local government level, allowing participation from all political parties.
He noted that there is currently a lack of engagement from parties not in power at the state level, partly due to perceived biases.
“We need to ensure real elections at the local government level to build confidence in the democratic process.
“This is progress for democracy, and we congratulate the Supreme Court justices. The parliament is determined to ensure the enforceability of this ruling,” Akpabio said.
In conclusion, Akpabio lauded the Supreme Court’s decision and expressed confidence that it marks the beginning of significant advancements in Nigeria’s democratic governance.
