Seven arrested over attack on LASPA officials in Lagos

The Lagos State Government has arrested seven suspects for allegedly attacking officials of the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) in the Ajah and Epe areas. The suspects, comprising staff and security personnel of Better Mart on Badore Road, Off Addo Road, Ajah, and Ashley Mall in Epe, are currently detained at Badore Police Station, Lekki, pending the conclusion of preliminary investigations before prosecution.

In a statement, LASPA General Manager, Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, vowed that the perpetrators would face the full wrath of the law for assaulting government officials carrying out lawful duties.

She condemned the act in strong terms, warning that severe consequences would be meted out in accordance with relevant laws.

Mrs. Adelabu cited Chapter 17, Section 117 of the Criminal Code of Nigeria, which stipulates that anyone who obstructs or resists a public officer in the discharge of lawful duties commits a felony and is liable on conviction to three years’ imprisonment or a fine of N200,000.

She explained that LASPA regulations require all organisations and commercial centres to obtain parking permits for proper parking management. According to her, the attacked officials were on a routine compliance check when they were assaulted, resulting in injuries.

The General Manager stressed that such actions undermine the government’s efforts to maintain order in public spaces and warned that they would not be tolerated.

She further noted that any future attack on LASPA or other government officials would attract punishment, not only for the direct perpetrators but also for landlords or tenants of the premises where such acts occur.

The state government urged residents and business owners to cooperate with officials to ensure smooth enforcement of parking regulations across Lagos.
