Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday inaugurated the Onyearugbulem–Shagari/Irese Road Flyover in Akure, describing the project as a major infrastructure boost capable of driving industrial and commercial growth in Ondo State.

The flyover, located along the busy Ilesha–Akure–Owo Expressway, was commissioned in the presence of Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, alongside top government officials and traditional rulers.

Speaking at the event, Shettima said the project would ease traffic congestion, improve road safety and support economic activities along the corridor. He commended the Ondo State Government for executing what he described as a timely intervention at a critical transport junction.

“This project will not only improve traffic circulation, but also stimulate economic growth and enhance regional connectivity,” the vice president said.

In his remarks, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the project as a landmark achievement, noting that it is the first flyover bridge to be constructed in Akure. He revealed that the initiative was aimed at ending years of gridlock and recurring accidents at the Irese junction.

“For years, this corridor remained a major flashpoint for accidents, traffic congestion and loss of productive hours. Today, that narrative has changed,” the governor stated.

The governor equally disclosed that the project was initiated under the administration of late former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and later completed by his administration in line with its commitment to continuity in governance.

Aiyedatiwa further announced that the flyover would be named after Reuben Fasoranti, the leader of Afenifere, who clocked 100 years on Monday, describing him as a symbol of integrity and selfless service to the Yoruba nation and Nigeria.
