Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Libreville, Gabon, to represent Nigeria at the inauguration of Gabon’s President-elect, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.

The trip, which took place on Saturday, May 3, 2025, was at the request of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Oligui Nguema, who served as Gabon’s interim leader since August 2023 following a political transition, emerged victorious in the country’s presidential election held on April 12, 2025.

According to final results released by Gabon’s Constitutional Court, Nguema secured 58,074 votes, representing 94.85% of total ballots cast. His closest rival, former Prime Minister Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze, garnered just 3%, while other candidates received less than 1% each.

Nigeria has expressed support for Gabon’s peaceful democratic transition and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democratic governance and regional stability across Central Africa.

Vice President Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria after the inauguration ceremony.
