Shettima reaffirms Nigeria-Benin ties at Wadagni’s inauguration in Cotonou

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with the Republic of Benin, describing the relationship between both nations as critical to regional integration and stability in West Africa.
Shettima made the remarks in Cotonou on Sunday while representing President Bola Tinubu at the inauguration of newly elected Beninese President Romuald Wadagni.
Speaking at the Presidential Palace during the swearing-in ceremony, the vice president said Nigeria views its partnership with Benin as strategic for democratic governance, economic growth and regional cooperation within West Africa.
He said President Tinubu’s attendance through the Nigerian delegation reflected the administration’s commitment to maintaining strong relations with neighbouring countries.
According to Shettima, Nigeria and Benin share deep-rooted cultural, economic and historical ties that predate colonial boundaries, noting that communities on both sides of the border remain closely connected through trade, language and family relationships.
He noted that the nearly 600-kilometre border shared by both countries cuts across several Nigerian states and links communities with similar cultural identities, particularly among Yoruba-speaking populations and residents of Borgu communities in both nations.
The vice president stressed the importance of collaboration between the two countries in promoting democracy, peace and economic development within the Economic Community of West African States sub-region.
Shettima disclosed that annual trade between Nigeria and Benin is valued at approximately $2 billion, adding that an estimated five million Nigerians currently reside in Benin.
