Shettima urges media–govt partnership at Kolade-Otitoju’s 60th birthday book launch

Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on the Nigerian media to see the government as a partner in national development by promoting constructive journalism and encouraging critical thinking to strengthen democracy.

Shettima made the remarks on Monday in Abuja at the public presentation of My Life and Journalists Hangout, a book written by TVC News Director of News, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, as part of activities marking his 60th birthday.

The Vice President emphasised the importance of courageous journalism in sustaining democratic values, noting that societies decline not because of a lack of ideas but due to the absence of people willing to question and scrutinise them.

According to him, the strength of a democracy is reflected not only in elections and institutions but also in the responsibility and professionalism of the media.

“A democracy depends on a media culture that knows when to probe, when to warn, when to illuminate, and when to restrain itself from becoming an accomplice to confusion,” he said.

He warned that unchecked narratives could weaken public institutions and national discourse, stressing that the media plays a vital role in holding power accountable and safeguarding truth.

Shettima also praised Kolade-Otitoju for his contributions to journalism, particularly through his television programme Journalists Hangout, which he said has helped foster a culture of informed debate and critical engagement in Nigeria.

He described the veteran journalist as a model of democratic courage and intellectual discipline, commending his longevity and integrity in the profession.
