Speaker’s alleged threat to Osun monarch sparks APC-PDP war of words

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State have traded accusations following a viral audio in which the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, allegedly threatened the monarch of his hometown, the Alasi of Asi, HRM Oba Olasunkanmi Oyewale Isaac.

In a statement on Thursday by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the APC condemned the Speaker’s alleged conduct as “uncultured and ill-mannered,” citing threats, insults, and curses reportedly directed at the 72-year-old traditional ruler during a phone conversation.

The APC claimed that the Speaker went as far as threatening to depose the monarch, have him arrested, and incite violence against him. It added that all efforts by the monarch’s wife, who allegedly received the call, to calm Egbedun were rebuffed.

Calling for immediate action, the APC urged the Inspector-General of Police to investigate and prosecute the Speaker, emphasizing that the monarch’s life should not be endangered.

The party also called on Egbedun’s constituents to initiate a recall process and asked members of the Assembly to begin impeachment proceedings, accusing him of embarrassing the legislature and disrespecting traditional rulers.

In response, the PDP described the APC’s statement as hypocritical and an attempt to politicize a sensitive issue for partisan gain. The party maintained that the Speaker’s outburst was provoked by prior threats to his life.

According to PDP spokesperson Hezekiah Oladele Bamiji, the threats had been reported to the police, and investigations were ongoing. He urged law enforcement to broaden the probe to include opposition figures.

“It is reckless for the APC to jump to conclusions and incite the public against the Speaker. Such actions are dangerous and should not be taken lightly,” the PDP warned.
