2027: Nasarawa Governor Sule backs Wadada as successor

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has announced Senator Aliyu Wadada as his preferred candidate to succeed him in the state’s next governorship election.

Sule made the declaration on Thursday during a meeting with political appointees at the Government House in Lafia, the state capital. He said the choice followed extensive consultations with stakeholders within and outside the state over the past year.

According to him, the selection process was narrowed down to three aspirants considered capable of winning the election before Wadada was eventually chosen.

“After exhaustive consultations, the field was narrowed to three aspirants… further consultations were conducted before a final decision was reached in favour of Senator Wadada,” Sule said, adding that the decision was guided by the need to field a candidate with strong electoral capacity.

“We had to look for people who have the capacity to win this election,” he added.

Wadada, who currently chairs the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, defected from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in August 2025.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled party primaries for the 2027 general elections to hold between April 23 and May 30, a period during which political parties are expected to select and field their candidates.
