Super Eagles aim for perfect preliminary stage finish against Uganda

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will conclude their Africa Cup of Nations Group C campaign today (Tuesday) when they face Uganda in Fez.
The Nigerians have already secured the top spot in the group after winning their opening two matches, while Uganda sit at the bottom with just one point, making Tuesday’s encounter crucial for the Cranes’ hopes of advancing.
Eric Chelle’s side have impressed so far, taking maximum points from their first two games. A 2–1 victory over Tanzania set the tone for their campaign, followed by a dramatic 3–2 win against Tunisia. Nigeria raced into a three-goal lead through strikes from Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman, but late goals from Tunisia created tension in the closing stages. The result highlighted Nigeria’s attacking prowess as well as occasional defensive vulnerability.
The Super Eagles’ strong group-stage form continues a trend in recent AFCON campaigns, with seven wins from their last nine group matches.
Across all competitions, Nigeria have now won seven of their last 10 matches, scoring and conceding in most, demonstrating both their firepower and moments of fragility.
With knockout qualification already secured, Chelle may rotate his squad, giving opportunities to players like Moses Simon, Chidera Ejuke and Paul Onuachu, while mainstays such as Osimhen, Ndidi and Lookman continue to provide goals and leadership.
Uganda, meanwhile, have had a more difficult tournament. The Cranes lost 3–1 to Tunisia in their opener and drew 1–1 with Tanzania, a game they could have won but for a late missed penalty by Allan Okello.
Paul Put’s side now have just one win in their last 10 AFCON matches, emphasising the challenge ahead as they attempt to reach the knockout stage. A win on Tuesday is essential for keeping their hopes alive, either to finish second in the group or potentially qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
Historically, Uganda have had moments of success against Nigeria, winning four of the eight previous encounters between the two nations, with two draws and two defeats. That record may provide some confidence, though Nigeria’s quality, depth and momentum make them clear favourites.
