Super Eagles focused on World Cup qualification, AFCON glory – Troost-Ekong

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has declared that the team is focused on securing a World Cup ticket and winning the next CAF African Nations Cup in Morocco.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference in Uyo on Monday evening, Ekong said, “We have experienced players in the team, with Alex Iwobi being the most capped. We also have young and very ambitious players who are hungry to be at the World Cup.
“Talking about this generation of players, I think we have something special here. With the quality we possess, our goal is to win the 2025 AFCON and qualify for the World Cup next year.”
Ekong also spoke about adapting quickly to Coach Eric Chelle’s tactics. “It’s for the coach to decide. The Super Eagles have players with great football understanding, and adaptation is a process.
“That is why we did great things in the last game, which gave us confidence. We are trying to build on that. It’s not easy to change tactics in just two days of training, but we are working on it.
“Thank God we have a lot of intelligent players who have played at a high level and are used to tactical changes from coaches. The coach also mentioned that we have a lot of quality in the team, and we saw that in the last game,” the Eagles’ skipper stated.
The 2013 African champions will face Zimbabwe on Tuesday in Matchday 6 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
Meanwhile, Group C leaders South Africa will face runners-up Benin Republic in Ivory Coast, while Rwanda hosts Lesotho.
