Super Eagles four matches away from sealing 2026 World Cup ticket

Although the qualifying series for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico has been concluded in the African zone, it is not yet over for Nigeria and three other countries.

With the nine group winners already through to the Mundial, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, and DR Congo still have a second chance to join the train to North America for the world’s biggest soccer showpiece.

From the Nigerian perspective, participation at the next Mundial — after missing out on the last one — is still very possible. Four more games stand between the Super Eagles and the ticket.

It is no longer news that the Super Eagles of Nigeria have reignited their World Cup qualification hopes after a dominant 4–0 victory over Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Inspired by a stunning hat-trick from Victor Osimhen and a late strike from Frank Onyeka, Nigeria secured second place in Group C of the CAF World Cup qualifiers. Despite the convincing win, the Super Eagles narrowly missed out on the top spot, as South Africa finished first with 18 points following a 3–0 triumph over Rwanda.

That result handed Bafana Bafana an automatic ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

However, Nigeria’s World Cup dream is still alive.

By finishing among the four best runners-up across the nine CAF qualifying groups, the Super Eagles advanced to the CAF Play-Offs, set to take place in Morocco from November 13 to 16, 2025.

To reach the 2026 World Cup, Nigeria must successfully navigate four crucial matches across two qualification phases.

Phase 1: CAF Play-Offs (Morocco – November 2025)

  1. Semi-Final vs Gabon
Nigeria will first take on Gabon in the semi-final stage. A win here would push them into the final round of the CAF Play-Offs.
  2. Final vs Winner of Cameroon vs DR Congo
If the Super Eagles overcome Gabon, they will face the winner between Cameroon and DR Congo. Triumphing in this decisive clash would earn Nigeria the right to represent Africa in the intercontinental play-offs.

Phase 2: FIFA Intercontinental Play-Offs (USA – March 2026)

  1. Intercontinental Semi-Final
At this stage, Nigeria will be drawn against a team from one of the other football confederations — Asia, South America (CONMEBOL), Oceania, or North/Central America (CONCACAF). Unless ranked among the top two seeded teams, the Super Eagles will need to play a semi-final before the final round.
  2. Intercontinental Final
A win in the semi-final would see Nigeria advance to the all-important final, where victory would secure their qualification for the expanded 48-team 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With just four matches separating them from a return to the world’s biggest football stage, the Super Eagles must stay composed, clinical, and consistent.

The 2026 tournament will be historic, featuring 48 teams for the first time. Africa now boasts nine direct qualification slots and one intercontinental play-off spot — a golden chance Nigeria will be eager to seize.
