Super Falcons captain Ajibade targets historic WAFCON triumph

Three years after receiving a red card that ended her participation in the semi-final of the 12th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca, Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade is leading Nigeria’s charge towards a record-extending title and personal redemption.

Ajibade was sent off alongside teammate Halimatu Ayinde in the semi-final clash against hosts Morocco, forcing Nigeria to play much of the second half and extra time with nine players. The team lost on penalties and later fell 1-0 to Zambia in the third-place match, with both midfielders suspended.

Now captain and in top form, Ajibade is determined to erase that painful memory as Nigeria prepares to face Cameroon in the WAFCON 2025 final on Saturday in Rabat. She has been instrumental in the team’s journey, earning Player of the Match accolades against Botswana, Zambia, and South Africa.

Her leadership and stellar performances have placed her among the top contenders for the Player of the Tournament award, edging closer with each commanding display.

Speaking before the championship began, Ajibade emphasized the team’s mindset during a CAF-hosted webinar: “For us, effort is everything. We’ll demonstrate what we’re capable of and build on our strengths. We have an incredible group of players and are committed to showing up as our best selves.”

The winger’s motivation is also fueled by Nigeria’s proud record at WAFCON finals, having never lost a championship match since their first title on home soil in 1998.

“We know pedigree and past achievements mean little in a match of this nature, but records also serve to inspire teams to rise to the occasion,” Ajibade said.

Victory in Rabat would not only secure Nigeria’s 12th WAFCON title but mark a full-circle moment for Ajibade — from past heartbreak to potential history.
