Suspected gunmen on Wednesday attacked the convoy of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, shortly after he left the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, in Osogbo.
The attack reportedly triggered an exchange of gunfire between the suspected attackers and security personnel attached to the governor’s convoy, with the shooting said to have lasted between 12 and 15 minutes.
It was gathered that the attackers arrived in an unregistered Sienna minibus through the Ita-Olokan area of Osogbo.
The development caused tension in the area as residents and traders were reportedly startled by the sound of gunshots and fled the area.
An eyewitness close to the palace said that a few minutes after the governor and his entourage entered the palace, they began hearing gunshots.
She said, “The guys were shooting from inside the main gate while the governor’s security team responded from inside the palace.
“The shooting was intense for almost three minutes before the hoodlums ran away in their vehicle before the governor’s convoy could exit the palace”.
The Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, confirmed the attack, adding that the governor’s security personnel successfully repelled the assailants and that no casualty was recorded.
