Suspected armed thugs have attacked the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees in Owo LGA area of Ondo State, Comrade Adetunji Adene.
According to reliable sources, the attackers, numbering about 20, invaded Adene’s residence shortly after he returned from an official assignment in Akure, allegedly targeting him.
Eyewitnesses indicated that the intervention of his wife, children and neighbours, who raised the alarm, forced the assailants to abandon the operation and flee.
Nonetheless, the union leader was said to have suffered severe injuries during the attack and is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where his condition was described as critical.
Reacting, the Ondo State President of NULGE, Comrade Fredrick Akinrinlola, condemned the incident, characterising it as a violent assault on the union and the local government system.
In a statement released on Monday, Akinrinlola warned that rising insecurity was creating panic among workers, with many now reluctant to report for duty due to safety concerns.
He therefore appealed to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to intervene urgently and restore normalcy in the affected area, describing the situation as dire.
The leader also called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect council workers, apprehend those behind the attack, and ensure they are brought to justice.
